Accidental bladder leaks can be embarrassing, distracting and really inconvenient. They can happen after pregnancy and also during perimenopause and menopause. Bladder leaks are not unique to women who have experienced pregnancy.  In some cases, they may be due to inherited traits.

When you come in for a visit, we’ll sit down in my consultation room and talk.  We need to find out how you are feeling and what’s going on.  Then, after a detailed history, we’ll do a physical exam to see if your bladder is dropping or if there is another physical cause for your incontinence.  During the process we will also assess the strength of your pelvic floor and your core muscles.

Then we’ll discuss treatment options including: hormone replacement, pessaries, pelvic floor therapy, surgery and where appropriate, V Tone,FormaV and Morpheus8 V.  These non-surgical treatments can even be done in between pregnancies without any issues.

Types of Urine Incontinence

Bladder leaks come in several forms: Stress, Urge or Mixed Incontinence.  Then there’s Nocturia.

Stress Incontinence refers to the embarrassing leaks that happen when you cough, sneeze, laugh, or lift your child, or a grocery bag.

Urge Incontinence is the accidental leak of urine that happens when you get a sudden urge to go to the bathroom. It can mess up social plans, long drives and even make it impossible to do exercise like running or jumping rope.

Mixed Incontinence refers to a combination of the two.

Nocturia refers to waking up frequently during the night to urinate. When nocturia occurs, it may become impossible to get a good night’s sleep or function normally during the day.  In acute cases of nocturia, especially with older women, the growing lack of sound sleep can result in what appears to be the rapid onset of senile dementia.
